I’m on a quest to prove that girls can be geeky, and geeks can be girly. (Just if you’re wondering, it’s a side quest only, but I find it worthwhile.) For myself, I’m not sure what the final score will be.
My personal counts so far: I own more computer games than pairs of shoes, even if I counted each pair as two pieces! My mother probably doesn’t approve of either obsession. 😀 I’ve been a subscriber of the German game mag GameStar for years, yet have never subscribed to a girl mag, even if I read some from time to time. One of my favorite findings in them is that no matter how rich you are, you can’t buy style. For me, “Prada” has as nice a ring to it as “BioWare”. I would never never never buy, or even play for free, a mere dress-up “game”, but I love face customization in games (such as Dragon Age or Fallout 3) and I absolutely hate it when games don’t show changing clothing/armor and equipment on your avatar. TBC and always looking for comments and additions!

I think I was a game geek from the first time I played a game on a computer – it was Sokoban around 1992, when I was eight years old. Most games I played back then were in English and I didn’t even know what I was doing, but I was determined to try and see what works and what doesn’t. I was hooked.
For the years to come, I played whatever my brother bought until I got my own computer – I was the first girl in my high school class that had her own computer. ^^
In spite of all this, it took me many more years to realize that I was a geek. But since then, just several years back, I wear the label proudly.
I am not sure I agree on your Twitter statement. Here in Austria, I know many girls who play games, but they don’t usually tweet about it or have it in their biography. Most of my game geek girl (I was pondering if I should take that as my Twitter name) friends are from the US and Canada…
